Q: Was the area around the site artificially built-up into the lake due to port/city development, or was it natural land that was carved out?

The original "natural" Chicago coastline was west of the competition site, roughly at the current North Michigan Avenue. For further information about the evolution of Chicago geography, we suggest "Chicago: Growth of a Metropolis" by Harold M. Mayer and Richard C. Wade.
